What actually pushes a photo over 200KB
200KB is a generous cap. It is typical of email attachment guidance, forum uploads and content management systems, and almost any photo that has been resized for the web fits under it comfortably.
Which means if you are over it, resizing is nearly always the real fix. A modern phone photo is somewhere between 2 and 6 MB straight off the camera — ten to thirty times this limit — and that size comes from pixel count, not from quality settings. Dropping quality alone on a 12-megapixel original gets you a soft, blotchy image that is still too big.
Resize to something sensible for the destination first. A photo that will be viewed on a screen rarely needs more than about 1600 px on its longest side, and at that size 200KB is not a constraint you have to think about.
File size or dimensions? A limit written in KB is about how much space the file takes up; a limit written in pixels is about how big the picture is.
