Compress Photo to 50KB (Passport/Visa)

Published July 16, 2026By Samson PG

Some portals want 100KB. Others cap at 50KB. Hitting the tighter limit without uploading your passport photo to a random site is the whole game.

Many job and visa forms reject photos over a fixed size. 100KB is common; 50KB shows up on stricter passport / visa / ID uploads. Compressing for that limit is different from “make it a bit smaller” — you need a target size, not a guessy quality slider.

50KB vs 100KB

Target Typical use
~100KB Many Indian job portals, generic form photos
~50KB Tighter passport/visa/ID slots
Smaller Rare; quality may collapse on large originals

If the form says “max 50KB,” delivering 80KB still fails. Check the error text; it usually names the limit.

Workflow that stays private

  1. Start from a clear face crop (passport-style) — compress cannot invent sharpness.
  2. Prefer JPG for photos (PNG often stays larger).
  3. Set an exact 50KB target in a local compressor.
  4. Download and confirm size in Explorer / Finder before uploading to the portal.
  5. Keep the original HEIC/JPG master; only submit the compressed copy.

If the photo is still HEIC from an iPhone, convert to JPG first, then compress.

Why upload compressors are a bad fit for ID photos

Passport and visa images are identity documents. Pasting them into an unknown “compress online” site creates an unnecessary copy on someone else’s server. Browser tools that run after page load never need that copy.

Common mistakes

  • Compressing a huge 12MP original without cropping the face first.
  • Using PNG for a photo and wondering why 50KB is impossible without mush.
  • Hitting 50KB, then re-exporting again in WhatsApp/email and blowing the limit.
  • Confusing pixel size (e.g. 200×200) with file size (KB) — portals often require both.

Use TryQuickImg Compress Image

TryQuickImg Compress Image can target 50 (or 100) KB in your browser. Drop JPG/PNG/WebP, set the KB limit, download. Nothing is uploaded for compression.

FAQ

Can every photo reach 50KB?

Not with usable quality. Very large, noisy, or PNG graphics may need resize first (Resize Image).

JPG or PNG for passport slots?

Photos → JPG. PNG only if the portal forbids JPG (uncommon for face photos).

Does TryQuickImg store my passport photo?

No. Processing stays in the tab after the page loads.
