Image Sizes

Social image sizes are the pixel dimensions each platform expects for avatars, banners, and posts. Uploading a random phone photo works, but Discord and LinkedIn will crop and recompress — better to resize yourself first.

Crop to the right aspect (square for avatars, wide for banners) with Crop Image.

Why “close enough” still looks soft

Platforms downscale large uploads. Starting at the display size (or 2× for retina) keeps edges cleaner than a 12 MP selfie crushed into a 128px circle.

File size vs pixels

Discord emoji packs and some upload UIs also enforce a max file size. After you hit the pixel size, run Compress Image if the upload still rejects the file. LinkedIn profile photos are usually forgiving on KB; banners benefit from a clean wide crop more than extreme compression.

Design for the crop you cannot control

Almost every platform displays a profile image as a circle while storing it as a square. Anything within roughly the corner 15% of the square gets clipped — so a logo that fills its canvas edge to edge loses its corners, and text near an edge gets cut mid-word.

Keep the subject centred with deliberate padding around it. The safest habit is to design in the square, then check it inside a circle before uploading; what looks balanced as a square often looks off-centre once masked.

Banners are cropped differently on every screen

Cover and banner images are the other reliable source of surprises: the same file is cropped to a different aspect ratio on desktop, on mobile, and in previews, and on several platforms a profile picture is overlaid across part of it.

Treat the stated dimensions as the maximum visible area, not the guaranteed one. Keep anything that must be readable — a tagline, a URL — in the middle band, away from the edges and clear of wherever the avatar sits.

Upload larger than you need, within reason

Platforms downscale aggressively and re-encode whatever you send. Uploading an image at exactly the displayed size leaves nothing for high-density screens, where it renders visibly soft. Supplying roughly 2× the nominal dimensions gives the platform enough pixels to produce a crisp result.

The limit is the file-size cap: past a point, heavier compression on their side undoes the benefit. Uploading at 2× and compressing to sit comfortably under the cap is the balance that survives their re-encode best.

PNG or JPG

Use PNG for logos, wordmarks, screenshots, and anything with hard edges or flat colour — JPEG compression creates visible fringing around sharp boundaries and small text. Use JPG for photographs, where it is far smaller at equivalent quality. If a PNG logo overruns a size cap, reducing the pixel dimensions usually preserves quality better than switching to JPG.
